Arriving by plane:
The simplest way is to fly to Düsseldorf or Köln/Bonn and then to take a train to Aachen (takes about 1.5 hours).
The airport Maastricht Aachen (http://www.maa.nl/) only offers a limited number of flights, but nevertheless it can be a very good alternative from selected destinations.
There are a number of less convenient alternatives to Düsseldorf. One can fly to Frankfurt (about 2.5 hours by train to Aachen), Brussels (about 2 hours), or Amsterdam (about 4 hours).
