Evaluating constraints from dark matter direct detection experiments
Dark matter direct detection experiments aim to observe the scattering of dark matter particles in low-background detectors, providing one of the most sensitive probes for many models of new physics. The accurate statistical interpretation of such searches for very rare events remains however challenging, in particular when combining the information from several different direct detection experiments. In this project, the student will learn to calculate the experimental signatures of dark matter scattering and compare the predicted signals to experimental results, using both analytical methods and numerical Monte Carlo simulations. The aim of this project is to explore the statistical tools used to describe direct detection experiments and to develop new methods for interpreting experimental results.
