The Collaborative Research Center ``Particle Physics Phenomenology after the Higgs Discovery’’ and the Institute for Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology (TTK) at RWTH Aachen University invite applications for a Junior Principle Investigator position in theoretical particle and astroparticle physics starting in fall 2023 or earlier.

The Junior Principle Investigator position offers early-career high-potential researchers an exceptional opportunity to sharpen their research profile. The successful candidate will be employed as a junior research group leader (pay grade TvL 14) for four years. We also offer additional funding for a PhD position and the opportunity to supervise doctoral candidates. The junior research group is expected to play a major role in the CRC ``Particle Physics Phenomenology after the Higgs Discovery’’ and in particular to strengthen research in the field of dark matter and the connection between dark matter physics at colliders and in astroparticle physics and cosmology. The junior research group will be based at the Institute for Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology at RWTH Aachen University. The CRC ``Particle Physics Phenomenology after the Higgs Discovery’’ is a joint venture of theoretical particle physicists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, RWTH Aachen University, the University of Siegen and Heidelberg University. It is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The CRC conducts research in theoretical particle physics, with the goal of developing and applying methods to discover new physics through precise measurements at the LHC, flavour factories and elsewhere, see here for more details. The Institute for Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology at RWTH Aachen University covers a broad range of research topics in theoretical particle and astroparticle physics, collider phenomenology, field theory, and cosmology. The faculty members of the institute are Profs. Michal Czakon, Robert Harlander, Michael Krämer, Julien Lesgourgues, Philipp Mertsch, Malgorzata Worek and Dr. Alexander Mück. Furthermore, Dr. Ben Page will join the group in October 2023.

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics and a strong track record in dark matter physics. We explicitly encourage applications from qualified women and underrepresented minorities. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference if equally qualified.

Applications including a list of publications, curriculum vitae and a short research statement should be e-mailed as a single pdf file to ttkJPI@physik.rwth-aachen.de. Three letters of reference should be e-mailed separately to the same address. The deadline for applications is December 19, 2022. Later applications will be considered as long as the opening exist.

We offer several PostDoc position in cosmology as well as in particle physics:

Postdoctoral position on cosmological interpretation of Lyman-alpha data at RWTH Aachen & KIT Karlsruhe

We are seeking excellent candidates for a joint 3-year postdoctoral position, including two years at RWTH Aachen in the group of Prof. Julien Lesgourgues and one year at KIT Karlsruhe in the new group of Prof. Felix Kahlhöfer. The candidate will spend the majority of their time working on the cosmological interpretation of Lyman-alpha data, and particularly of forthcoming year-1 data from DESI.

The funding is provided through a joint grant from the French and German research agencies (ANR and DFG, respectively), named “DESI-Lya”. The project involves frequent interactions with our collaborators in Saclay (E. Armengaud, N. Palanque-Delabrouille, C. Yèche…) who are working on the measurement of the 1D and 3D Lyman-alpha flux power spectrum in DESI. The candidate will set up hydrodynamical simulations, emulators, likelihoods and parameter inference pipelines to constrain the neutrino mass and some properties of non-minimal dark matter models (warm DM, self-interacting DM…) Previous experience on N-body simulations and/or hydrodynamical simulations and/or cosmological parameter extraction, as well as a strong interest in the connections between particle physics and cosmology, would be valuable assets. We aim to increase the diversity at our institutes and therefore particularly encourage women and underrepresented minorities to apply. In case of suitable qualification, preference will be given to applicants with disabilities.

The project is expected to start on the 1st of September 2023, but candidates available on a shorter time scale will also be considered on an individual basis. The position will be paid at the salary level E13 TVL, which is the standard postdoctoral salary level in Germany. Applicants should provide a curriculum vitae, a list of publications and a brief description of their research interests (in a single pdf file). Applications should be send to the email address:

ttkpostdoc@physik.rwth-aachen.de

until December 16, 2022. In the subject field, please include at least the word 'cosmology 2022' and your family name (e.g.: 'application cosmology 2022 Lemaitre'). In addition, the applicant should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address.

Postdoctoral positions in Particle Phyiscs at TTK

The Institute for Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology (TTK) at RWTH Aachen University invites applications for several postdoctoral positions in theoretical particle physics (salary scale TvL E13) starting in fall 2023 or earlier. The postdoctoral positions will be affliated with the research groups of Prof. Robert Harlander, Prof. Michael Krämer, or Dr. Ben Page with a specific focus on:

  • Precision LHC phenomenology within the Standard Model and beyond
  • Effective field theories
  • Higher-order perturbative calculations and the mathematical structure of scattering amplitudes
  • Perturbative gradient flow and its connection to lattice QCD
  • Dark matter phenomenology
  • Theory and applications of machine learning

The Institute for Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology covers a broad range of research topics in theoretical particle and astroparticle physics, collider phenomenology, field theory, and cosmology. The faculty members of the institute are Profs. Michal Czakon, Robert Harlander, Michael Krämer, Julien Lesgourgues, Philipp Mertsch, Malgorzata Worek and Dr. Alexander Mück.
