How to GAN

Abstract:
LHC physics is unique in the sense that we compare highly complex data with first-principles predictions. These predictions usually rely on Monte Carlo simulations and inherit some of their limitations from this simulation technique. I will show how generative neural networks can be used as an alternative to Monte Carlo simulations and discuss advantages and disadvantages of both approaches. I will also discuss how generative networks can be used to invert Monte Carlo simulations, for instance to define a full phase space unfolding.

The first 30 minutes are reserved for a discussion session with students and young postdocs. The actual talk starts at 16.30.

Precision flavor physics

Abstract:
The majority of the Standard Model parameters can be associated with its Yukawa sector, and precision measurements and calculations in this sector are therefore crucial when searching for new phenomena. However, the determination of parameters in the quark sector faces the difficulty of confinement of quarks into hadrons. In particular, hadronic matrix elements in quark-flavor transitions are highly nontrivial to compute. Using examples,  I will review how precision can be gained -- perturbatively and non-perturbatively -- in such processes, where the limitations are, and how searches for new physics are impacted by these results.
